Premium Rate SMS
Premium Rate SMS (PSMS) or reverse charge billing is a mobile phone service that allows content or service providers to send a billing SMS to a phone.
The charge is only made to the mobile user when the PSMS actually reaches the mobile device. All PSMS are on specific and fixed tarrifs - 10p, 25p, 75p, £1, £1.50, £3 or £5. They can only be sent in response to an inbound SMS from that mobile user.
All PSMS are associated with a shortcode number - 4,5 or 6 digit numbers. Often a keyword must be sent as the first word of the SMS. This is helps the service provider to identify different requests for content.
Currently PSMS may only be used for services delivered to the phone (such as ringtones, games or backgrounds) and not as a mobile payment system. It can, in certain circumstances be used for website subscriptions.
